GAS PRESSURE REGULATOR

Better than a needle valve for low, constant gas flow. Use on the low-pressure side of a standard or a two-stage gas regulator. Suitable for instruments which need a very low pressure and gas flow e.g. gas proportional counters, sputter coaters, ion beam thinners etc. A pressure gauge that fits into the regulator is available as a separate item. Its pressure range is 0-200kPa but lowest flow can only be gauged with a bubbler.
Regulator has 12.5mm (1/2") female gas fitting for in and out connection.

VACUUM DESICCATION

Desiccation, or just dry keeping, of materials may be achieved by keeping the material warm (incubator or oven), trickling industrial dry nitrogen gas through an enclosed space, or keeping the material in an enclosed space with a drying agent - most frequently used is Silica Gel. All of these methods require a well sealed, non-porous, enclosed space suitable for the dry material.

Another very effective method is to store material to be dried under a vacuum. Frequently this is not just to dry the material but also to reduce or remove an undesirable gas - most frequently oxygen. Evacuation achieves this, and the elimination of O2 is even better if a system is evacuated, then filled to atmospheric pressure with a desirable gas (usually industrial dry nitrogen or argon). The evacuation and refilling process is called a "purge cycle". Several cycles will produce the purest gas atmosphere possible.

Trickling N2 through a desiccator not designed for vacuum is possible, but running a purge cycle, or the availability of a vacuum/ air lock, requires a more complex instrument.

It must be appreciated that a vacuum exerts pressure on the external surface that is very close to the weight of the atmosphere. Also, in terms of pressure exerted there is very little difference between a poor and a very high vacuum. High vacua are achieved by removing more gas molecules, 99% of the atmosphere is pumped away quickly.

The little round plastic and glass desiccators, which feature on this page, can take a full vacuum, but all other desiccators must be identified as Vacuum desiccators (or cabinets) if they are to be connected to a vacuum pump. In the old imperial system 14.7 pounds/ square inch is the weight of the atmosphere. In metric that is 0.97kg per cm²; systems for vacuum must be built to withstand those pressures, plus a large safety margin.

Clear polycarbonate top. White polypropylene base provides excellent chemical resistance. Supplied with O‐ring, PP perforated plate and stopcock with PTFE plug. Will hold a vacuum of 740mm Hg for 24 hours.

PC is sometimes known as "bullet proof glass", it is very strong and it is most suitable for vacuum desiccators. However PC may not be autoclaved and in fact loses, at around 60°C, its super‐strength. If these desiccators are heated the PC will only have the strength of conventional plastics and may not tolerate a vacuum.

Valve is removable and a plug is included if vacuum is not required.

Considering "purge" and "vacuum" types.

These cabinets are available as "purge" and "vacuum" models. Purge models are are thin walled and cannot take a vacuum. Trickling a gas like industrial dry nitrogen will develop a dry and fairly pure nitrogen atmosphere sufficient for some sterile or oxygen sensitive applications., but continuous trickling of gas into the chamber requires a long time to achieve a very pure atmosphere of a particular gas.


Vacuum chambers must withstand the weight of the earth atmosphere, which is about 1kg/cm² (or 14.7 lbs/"). They also need a safety margin, and they must be very airtight. The application of vacuum (a two stage diaphragm pump like our VF4-02 is suitable) alternated with bleeding gas into the chamber achieves a pure gas environment much more quickly and with much less gas than when using gas only. Alternating purge and vacuum cycles is akin to a serial dilution, but using gas. As an example, consider a concentrated bacteria solution: 0.1mL of concentrate into 99.9mL of saline is a 1000 fold dilution; repeated once again would results in a 1:1,000,000 dilution. Vacuum desiccators and glove boxes are most efficient when very pure gas, or very low oxygen is required.


Vacuum purging of glove boxes is possible because the glove ports are covered with blanking plates and both sides of the gloves are evacuated; click on the photo and the enlarged image shows this well. Using the gloves while the system is under vacuum is not possible as they would blow up under the one sided pressure.


Applications of glove boxes are manifold.

  • For a sterile workspace (UV?) or when handling dangerous micro-organisms, vacuum purging often is no advantage;
  • for a super-clean workspace, vacuum purging is an advantage since cylinder gases (usually industrial dry N2) are perfectly clean and dry;
  • if a work space with a pure gas is required including to work with highly oxidising materials, then a vacuum glove box is essential.

Please note that purge and vacuum glove boxes are not designed for positive pressures - accordingly do not allow gas to enter the chamber under high pressure. These desiccators and glove-boxes do not allow the build up of pressure within, but be aware while operating, and blocking the air outlet could be disastrous.
