PEAK

PEAK MAGNIFIERS

The Peak Optical Company was established in Tokyo in 1950, based on an earlier optical company founded in 1914 in Yokohama. Peak is now Japan's leading manufacturer of magnifiers.
We offer a large range of Peak magnifiers suitable for varied applications.

Magnifer quality considerations: With very few exceptions, which are indicated, Peak uses crown and flint glasses for their lenses. Acrylic lenses have excellent optical properties. They are lighter than glass, but more prone to scratching.

Better magnifiers have a "flat field", which means that the area in view is in focus from edge-to-edge. A simpler magnifier has insufficient lens elements to correct for the fact that the distance to the edge of a field of view is greater than to the centre (spherical aberration).
All of the scale magnifiers have excellent flat fields, but best are the anastigmatic magnifiers, 4x and 7x on page O4.

Components of white light (red, green, blue etc.) are affected differently when passing through a lens. This manifests itself as colour fringes along edges. Good optics are corrected to negate the effect by using lenses of different materials and shaping of lenses. The artefact is called chromatic aberration and Peak magnifiers are free from these effects.

Optimal selection of magnifiers for particular purposes is based on experience, knowledge and personal preference. It is basic that high magnification is at the loss of field - visible area. A 30x magnifier is great to inspect a single printed letter and is not efficacious for reading.
For reading small print or for looking at photographs magnifications of 2x or 3x is sufficient.
5x or 7x magnifiers are good as universal magnifiers for many medium magnification tasks.
Higher magnifications are for inspecting increasingly finer details.

The scale magnifiers on this page have certain features in common.
Screwed with a collar to the base of the acrylic skirt is an interchangeable scale. These can be seen in focus together with the subject and so, depending on the scale one can measure and compare distances in 0.1mm units, angles, small circle diameters, thread pitch of bolts and more.
The acrylic skirt is removable and then the magnifier becomes a hand-held unit. All the scale magnifiers have a focus adjustment to correct for short or long vision and also if they are used above the subject - like on top of the long glass scales.
The most popular scale magnifier is the 10x unit.
All of our scale magnifiers are supplied with a simple measuring scale, giving 0.1mm readings and, except O2504 & O2507, come in a durable storage pouch.

MEASURING MAGNIFIERS, 30X

30x, 4 elements in 2 groups resulting in a flat and sharp image over the entire 7mm field.
Supplied with 26mm diameter, No 8 scale reticle with vertical centre line. Horizontal line shows 5mm in 0.05mm units and 0.02mm could be read well against that scale. Since the field of view is small, the other 26mm diameter special purpose scales are not suitable as only the central part of those scales would be visible.

ANASTIGMATIC MAGNIFIERS, with scale

A magnifier for the most discerning user. It has an acrylic collar for specimen illumination. An alternative black plastic collar is provided for use with tranmitted light.

4X
Inspect whole large areas of 32 x 45mm or, flat objects less than 58mm in diameter. The image observed through the loupe is critically sharp from the centre to the edge of the image field because of the careful optical correction of the loupe for astigmatism and curvature of field as well as aberrations concerning the image of the central image. Ordinary magnifiers are corrected only for the central image. This loupe is similar to anastigmatic photographic lenses and is manufactured with the same care and precision. One point which distinguishes this loupe from photo-lenses is the position of the effective pupil of the loupe. It is placed as far as 25mm above the upper plane of the loupe. The observer can inspect the whole image field by merely moving the eye. Magnification: 4x; Field of View: 58mm; Effective Aperture: 30mm.; Min. Scale Division: 0.1mm; Working Distance: 54mm; Size: 73 OD x 77mm (2.9 OD x 3"); Weight: 272g (9.6 ounces).

GLASS SCALES

These Japanese made scales, are very useful for measuring or calibrating in the dissecting scope magnification range, or for other purposes when accuracy of better than 1/20mm is required for lengths of up to 1m.

These flat and well polished glass strips are marked by photo-printing over the entire length in 0.1mm units. This makes very accurate measurements over distances of up to 1m. A ruling machine places the markings absolutely precisely
Borosilicate glass is used for greater strength and minimal thermal expansion. It's co-efficient is ~3 x 10−6 /°C at 20°C, and that calculates the thermal expansion is only 3µm over a 1m length per degree Celsius.
The S-series scales come with 2 magnifiers set on sliders.
Supplied in a sturdy, padded case.

Enlargeable image shows section of long scale within its case. Magnifier slides on beveled edges with the scale is graduated to 0.1mm over the entire length.

SCALE RETICLES

Any scale with the corresponding diameter may be fitted to the above magnifier for special sizing purposes. However, high power magnifiers have a limited field-of-view. The 30x magnifier (which takes a 26mm reticle) 'sees' only 7mm and therefore these special reticules would rarely be any use.
For 7x (26mm), 10x (35mm) and 15x (26mm) measuring magnifiers.
