EASISLICER™ VIBRATING MICROTOME

The PELCO easiSlicer™ introduces the new standard in vibratory slicing. It combines ease of operation, precise engineering and affordable pricing in a high quality instrument. All operational controls are located on the front of the instrument, clearly labeled and sealed against moisture. The specimen tray is held securely in the polypropylene bath by a set of strong magnets. The bath is attached from the side with a unique spring-loaded base that locks onto the PELCO easiSlicer™ by simple pressure.


The amplitude and speed controls are conveniently mounted in the centre of the control panel for ease of operation. The sturdy, removable blade holder is offered in 3 angles: fifteen, eighteen and twenty-one degree to provide choice for each individual application. This eliminates the need to calibrate the blade angle. Feather® Blades are recommended but the blade holder will accommodate other types of blades. The Sectioning Window Controls guide the user for precise cutting window control with indicator lights on the control panel to maintain consistency of placement.

The Magnifier and Light Assembly offers bright white LED lighting (no risk of high temperatures) with high or low settings, depending on the user's need. The Magnifier can be moved out of the viewing
path, if desired. The entire assembly operates smoothly on metal slides.

The large Section Thickness Knob is centrally located in the work area. The knob is labeled in microns and has a perceptible detent every 5 microns. One complete revolution of the knob is 100 microns. The entire bath and tray assembly is raised and lowered by this Section Thickness Knob. The PELCO easiSlicer™ has a Return Switch that provides the user with an option for Auto Return after each slice. In the Manual Return mode, the cutting will cease once the end of the section window has been reached. This allows the retraction of the specimen before the return of the blade in order to prevent damage to the specimen.

The PELCO easiSlicer™ comes equipped with tools and supplies to start cutting quality, consistent sections, right out of the box.

for Sectioning Fresh or Fixed Tissue

The DTK Microslicers™ have a unique design for the vibratory motion of the cutting blade. They are made to cut sections of extremely soft tissues like brain, liver or similar difficult-to-section material. The Microslicers™ line of instruments are well known for their quality and their superior results, enjoying an excellent reputation in the neuroscience research community.


Objective of the Microslicer™
The Microslicer™ is an instrument used to cut sections of fresh or fixed animal or plant tissues without freezing the tissues.

Fresh tissue sections (10 to 500 micrometers in thickness) are used in anatomy, physiology and pharmacology research areas. In addition, fresh botanical tissue sections are also used in the various research fields.

Histochemistry and cytochemistry procedures require incubation of tissue sections in various reaction media. Large tissue blocks and thick tissue sections often produce non-specific deposits of reaction products and areas of no reaction in the center of the tissues. This is due to the poor penetration of the reaction media into the tissue. The use of thinner tissue sections is required to facilitate the penetration of the reaction medium into the tissues.


DSK Microslicer™ (DTK-1000, DTK-Zero1 and DTK-3000W) are instruments for cutting non-frozen tissue sections easily and efficiently.

There is a Choice of Three Microslicer™ Models:

  • MicroslicerDTK-1000 - the basic model for manual operation
  • MicroslicerDTK-Zero1 - reduced Z-axis movement of the head for superior cutting quality, manual unit but includes motorized specimen movement and features the useful retraction mode
  • MicroslicerDTK-3000W - automatic system for serial sectioning and includes the Microslicer Zero Z technology.

The Microslicer™ vibratory tissue slicer systems feature a constant cutting amplitude and a selectable frequency. The DTK-Zero1, and DTK-3000W models feature the Microslicer™ Zero-Z technology with a redesigned cutting head for dramatically reduced Z-axis vibration. All systems have a bath with a simple but effective drain. The specimen tray allow for reduced use of solutions and cooling around it. The layout of the switches on either side of the tray allows for easy operation and reduced spillage on the controls.

Microslicer™ retraction mechanism
The retraction mechanism is a function included in the DTK-Zero1 and DTK-3000W models that prevents the retracting blade from touching the face of the specimen. The specimen tray is lowered by 120 micrometers after the cutting of each section and is raised by exactly the same distance when a new cutting cycle starts.

EMS VIBRATING MICROTOMES
The EMS 5000mz is a very competitively priced high precision unit with a z-axis deflection of only 1-2 microns and a blade advance controllable to 10 microns/sec. The EMS 7000smz unit has a sub-micron z-axis deflection and a blade advance controllable to 10 microns/second. On both units the section thickness step size is 0.001mm, and each vibrating microtome is supplied with its own z-axis calibration verifier. All types of sectioning are possible, including sectioning for visual patching of neurological tissue, heart, and lung.

Z-axis deflection
The effect of excessive Z-axis deflection on the health and viability of the tissue preparation has been much discussed since the publication of Jonas et al (2003), and the EMS 7000smz will now deliver perfect sections every time with sub-micron Z-axis deflection across a wide range of vibration speeds and amplitudes.The affordable 5000mz offers almost the same features with Z-axis deflection of 1-2 microns at all vibration speeds and amplitudes, which is less than most other microtomes on the market.

User interface
The all-new user interface is both easy to use and versatile. The 7000smz and the 5000mz offer similar operation at the press of a button. The versatility includes simple operation at the push of a button or a range of changeable and programmable parameters, and a menu enables the settings of your own preferences.

Long working life and consistency
The EMS 7000smz also gives longevity of performance, in other words it not only gives submicron performance, but the advanced vibrating mechanism does not contain bearings and other components subject to wear. Consequently it will retain the sub-micron Z-axis deflection performance for years to come, giving consistency in biological preparation.

Optional accessories
Tissue cooling is accomplished by the use of either an ice-water bath or an electronically controlled thermo-electric cooler. Other options include an LED cold light source and a magnifier or a stereoscope for clear observation whilst slicing.

EMS 5000 SERIES OSCILLATING TISSUE SLICERS

The EMS 4500 and 5000 Oscillating Tissue Slicers represent the most thoughtfully designed solution to sectioning either fixed or fresh tissue, as thin as 5 microns. No longer is there a need for embedding or freezing your sample, and preparation time is reduced dramatically. The risk of distortion and artefacts normally associated with these procedures is eliminated. The EMS 4500 and 5000 meet the highest standards for precision and accuracy as well meeting or exceeding the performance of units on the market costing twice as much.

Applications

The EMS 5000 series may be used for the sectioning of samples in the fields of electrophysiology of fresh tissue, immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry, neurophysiology, neuropathology, experimental biology, histology, cytology, botanical research, microscopy, polymer and materials science. The EMS 5000 now features a new design of the slicer head which minimises Z-axis vibration. This improvement dramatically improves slice surface integrity and is especially beneficial in the field of fresh tissue where IR/DIC imaging methods are concerned. The unique blade holder has now been modified to accept razor, sapphire, diamond and glass blades.

Programmable travel window

To reduce time between slices the EMS 5000 series features a user programmable travel window (cutting window). This allows the sectioning cutting range of the blade to be customised to the specimen sample. This feature of "automatic sectioning" offers a beginning advance and end advance, further automating the EMS 5000. In conjunction with the "home button" the programmable window guarantees rapid sectioning of even the largest of specimens. As well, the EMS 5000 allows the sectioning of samples in two different modes. In single slice mode, the unit sections samples and harvests them while the blade repositions itself to perform the next slice, and in the multiple slice mode the EMS 5000 will automatically perform multiple uniform slices.

Control panel

The EMS 5000 series control panel has been totally redesigned to allow for ambidextrous and ergonomic operation. The keypad has been sealed to avoid buffer spill seepage. The tray is made from moulded clear polycarbonate for improved viewing of the slicing operation. The tray is removable to facilitate specimen mounting and cleaning. Two white LEDs are installed in the blade head, which provide constant cold illumination of the specimen during the slicing process.

Slicing

The EMS 5000 series is engineered for maximum stability, which ensures even the most delicate of tissue to be cut successfully every time. The knife holder allows any blade (as per list) to be secured and the blade angle set from 10- 20 degrees. The specimen mount is x, y, z axis adjustable and the knife advance is continuously adjustable with a touch of the keypad from 0- 5mm/s and the section thickness is now adjustable in 1 micron increments ranging from 1-999 microns. The precision slicer features automatic touch selection of section thickness, blade speed, advance and a user-defined travel window, so that the consecutive sections may be cut easily and rapidly. Other EMS 5000 features include touch pad control of the blade height, slice counter / slice thickness, precise bar graph displays of blade oscillation and advance speeds. Blade oscillation is adjustable from 50-5000 cycles/minute and advance speed is adjustable continuously from 100 microns - 5mm/sec.

Mounting of specimens

The tissue pedestal with pivotal pin (included with media tray), allows for the mounting of a specimen directly to the pedestal and the ability to change the angle of your specimen relative to the blade, offering you perfect specimen orientation. The sample vice with pivotal pins (also included in package) allows for the adherence of your specimen directly to a mounting block.

Maintenance

Our EMS 5000 series is designed for easy operation and maintenance. The specimen collecting tray is removable and easy to clean. All controls may be set with one hand with options for multiple slicing modes.

Accessories

The unit comes complete with gooseneck magnifying lens, media tray (63mm wide) and pedestal, specimen vice holder, blocks, as well as a foot switch with 1.8m cable. A large tray (89mm wide) is available as an option and comes complete with fixed stage and adjustable pedestals.

EMS 4500 Tissue Slicer

The EMS 4500 is a scaled down version of the EMS 5000. It has the same specifications as the EMS 5000. The difference between the two units is that the EMS 4500 does not include the following features and accessories:

SAPPHIRE KNIVES

Sapphire knives may be used with all vibrating or oscillating types of microtomes for applications in Neuroscience, Electrophysiology/Histology. They offer several advantages over conventional razor blades.

Improved section quality
Sapphire knives provide significantly improved section quality over razor blades, particularly in electrophysiology applications. Distortion-free sections are possible at section thickness down to 5µm.

Smoother surfaces for histology
By making a cleaner cut, the surface cells remain alive and intact, so the researcher can more easily explore the live and responsive interior cells. The clean cut produced by the sapphire knife results in smoother surfaces, making it easier to follow small labelled elements.

Thinner sections are possible with a vibrating microtome
