Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is the most widely used chemical fixative. Formaldehyde is water-soluble, colourless and toxic. Granular or powdered paraformaldehyde is dissolved in hot water to become a formaldehyde solution.
Formaldehyde reacts with primary amines on proteins and nucleic acids to form partially-reversible methylene bridge crosslinks.
