TEM Grids Selection Guide

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grids are generally made of copper, molybdenum, gold or platinum but can also be made of other materials such as nickel, beryllium and various alloys. The grids are 3.05mm or 2.3mm in diameter, with a thickness and various size/shape mesh ranging from a few to 500μm. Thin samples (tissue sections, molecules, etc) are mounted on the grids and a beam of electrons are transmitted through the sample generating a projection image. These images provide detailed information about the specimens inner structure, such as crystal structure, morphology, and chemical composition.

Athene Grids

  • Square, hexagonal, parallel, slot and round mesh shapes.
  • Copper, nickel, gilded and platinised.
  • 50, 75, 150, 200, 300 and 400 mesh.
  • Round holes with 420, 430 and 850 mesh.

EMBRA Grids

  • Electroformed grids- high open area with a rigid construction for easy handling.
  • Copper, nickel, gold, stainless steel, titanium, molybdenum, aluminium, and nylon.
  • 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mesh.

Gilder Grids

  • Square mesh (50 to 2000 apertures), hexagonal mesh, and slot grids.
  • Copper, nickel, gold, molybdenum, and copper/palladium.

Maxtaform Grids

  • Copper, nickel and gold.
  • Available with a rhodium, coating
  • 200, 300, and 400 mesh.

Pioloform Grids

  • Pioloform polymer - high thermal and mechanical stability compared to Formvar.
  • Gold, nickel, and copper.
  • 75, 100, 200, 300, 400 mesh, and 2 x 1mm.

Quantifoil Grids

  • Grids coated with carbon support films of predefined hole size and arrangement.
  • Copper, nickel, and gold.
  • 200 to 400 mech.
  • Various hole diameter/interspace ratios, such as R 0.6/1, R 1/2, R 1.2/1.3, and S 7/2.

Veco Grids

  • Most rigid of all mesh grids for superior strength and handling.
  • Copper, nickel, and gold.
  • 75, 100, 150, 200, 300, and 400 mesh.

PELCO Grids

  • Square, hexagonal, slotted mesh, double folding grids, half grids, tabbed grids, slotted or round hole.
  • Copper, nickel, gold and silicone monoxide.
  • 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 500 mesh.

Index and Reference Grids

  • Centre reference, finder, pinpointer, London finder, coordinator, asbestos analysis.
  • Formvar and carbon coated.
  • Copper, molybdenum, titanium.

Specialty Grids

  • SynapTek, Cryo-SiN, Chien grids, tomography, Sjostrand.
  • Copper, molybdenum, titanium, pyrolytic carbon, silicone nitride.

Window Grids

  • Thin, transparent membrane within a sturdy frame for high-resolution imaging and analysis.
  • Silicon nitride, silicon dioxide.
